Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891) was born in Dnepropetrovsk, Russia (now Ukraine). After turning 18, she traveled around the world for over 20 years. In her search for wisdom and knowledge, she came into contact with many religious/mystical traditions and met her eastern teachers.

Together with HS Olcott and WQ Judge, she founded the Theosophical Society in New York in 1875. The main objective of the Society is to spread the ancient wisdom among people so that they will understand that all beings are interconnected and essentially one.

Isis Unveiled was her first major work and was published in 1877. She subsequently wrote several other books, of which The Secret Doctrine is best known. She was also the editor of two theosophical journals and also wrote many articles for English, French and Russian magazines and newspapers.
