G. de Purucker was born in 1874 in Suffern, New York. In Geneva he studied English, French, German, Hebrew, Latin and Greek, but through his study of oriental philosophy, Sanskrit and the works of the early church fathers he turned his attention to Occultism and Esoteric Philosophy. In 1892 he became a member of The Theosophical Society, of which he was Leader from 1929 until his death in 1942.
